About the Author - Princess September | New Broadway (MCB) | Class 8 Literature | English
William Somerset Maugham was born on January 25, 1874, in Paris, France. He was a renowned British playwright, novelist, and short story writer, recognized as one of the most famous and significant authors of the 20th century. Maugham's work is recognized for its clear, lucid prose and harsh yet insightful understanding of human nature.
Maugham served as a secret agent during World War I and travelled extensively, an experience clearly represented in his works, often set in diverse and exotic locations. He explored themes of personal freedom, the corrosive effects of wealth, and the search for meaning in life in his work. His famous works include "Of Human Bondage" (1915), "The Moon and Sixpence" (1919), and numerous short story collections.
In addition to being an acclaimed author, Maugham was also a dedicated and skilled observer of life and human nature. He spent the latter part of his life living in the south of France, in a villa named "Mauresque". He died on December 16, 1965, leaving behind a vast and significant literary legacy.
