Statement "Science day falls on Friday" is
A) always true
B) always false
C) ambiguous
D) true for leap years
The correct answer is C) ambiguous.
The statement "Science day falls on Friday" is ambiguous because it does not specify which science day or for which year it is referencing. Without this information, we cannot definitively say whether Science day falls on a Friday or not. Therefore, the statement can be true in some years and false in others, leading to ambiguity.
Long Questions - Some Natural Phenomena | NCERT | Science | Class 8
Discuss in detail how the phenomenon of lightning occurs and how it's related to the commonly observed sparks when wires or plugs are loose? Also, explain the preventive measures we need to adopt to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of lightning.
Lightning is an electric spark on a gigantic scale caused by the accumulation of charges in the clouds due to upward-moving air currents and downward-falling water droplets. These charges trigger an electric discharge, similar to the sparks seen when electric wires or plugs are loose.
To protect ourselves from lightning, we should take refuge in a building or a vehicle with closed windows and doors. Open fields, tall trees, elevated places, and carrying umbrellas can increase the risk of lightning strikes. Inside the house, avoid contact with telephone cords, electrical wires, metal pipes, and running water. Electronic devices should be unplugged.
Lightning Conductors, installed in buildings, provide a safe route for the charge to be transferred to the ground, minimising the damage from a lightning strike.
The experiment of the plastic comb getting charged when rubbed with dry hair is a common occurrence during winters. Based on this scenario, can you delve into the concept of 'charging by rubbing' and explain how this phenomenon aligns with the concept of electric charges?

Can you explain why an electric spark occurs?
An electric spark occurs due to the accumulation of charges in certain areas like clouds or on objects. These accumulated charges create a high electric field around them. When this electric field becomes sufficiently high, it forces the nearby free electrons to accelerate to very high velocities. On collision with other atoms, these fast-moving electrons can knock off more electrons leading to a chain reaction causing a rapid de-neutralization resulting in a spark.
Explain the phenomenon of charging by rubbing with an example.
