How has the ice stupa invention contributed to life in Ladakh?
The invention of ice stupas by Sonam Wangchuk has significantly contributed to life in Ladakh by addressing the region's acute water scarcity. During winter, these vertical ice towers are built and when they start to melt in late spring, the water can be used for various purposes. Their conical shape minimizes exposure to the sun, thus preventing premature melting. This innovative approach not only provides an alternative source of water in dry periods but also puts Ladakh on the map as a place of sustainability and innovation.

About the Author - Sonam Wangchuk | Enhanced English Alive Coursebook | Class 8 Literature | English
Sonam Wangchuk is an engineer, innovator, and education reformist from Ladakh, India. Born and brought up in a tiny village, Wangchuk's early education was holistic, involving hands-on practical skills. He later studied mechanical engineering and began teaching children, which made him realize the poor state of education in his region. To address this, he introduced alternative learning practices and reduced the student failure rate from 95 per cent to 25 per cent. Wangchuk then co-founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), a sustainable school for students who have failed their tenth grade exams. Wangchuk also invented the ice stupa—a vertical artificial glacier—to solve the problem of water scarcity in Ladakh, and for which he received the Rolex Award for Enterprise. He plans to use the prize money to fund his dream project, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, which aims to create a sustainable ecosystem of constant innovation.
