Read the summary of the poem. Number the paragraphs in the correct order.
The traveller feels that his little horse must find it strange that they have not stopped near a farmhouse, but in the wilderness between the woods and a frozen lake. He has done so, on the darkest evening of the year, of the winter solstice, when the northern hemisphere has the shortest day and longest night. The ‘darkest evening’ might also mean that the traveller is sad and the world seems gloomy to him.
In the first stanza, the traveller stops near a forested area. He thinks he knows whom the woods belong to. The owner lives in the village and is, therefore, not around to see the traveller stopping to watch the woods fill up with snow.
‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ was written by American poet Robert Frost in 1922. It is written from the point of view of a traveller, and set in a quiet atmosphere. The traveller stops in the woods to watch the snow fall, but decides to move on because he has commitments to fulfill.
Finally, the traveller shakes himself out of his reverie. The woods are lovely, dark and deep but he has made promises he wants to keep, so he needs to keep travelling towards his destination. As he puts it, he has to go a long way before he can rest. The poet has stressed o this thought by the repetition used in the last two lines of the poem.
The horse pulls at its harness. The balls on its harness tinkle as if to ask whether the traveller has made some mistake in stopping here, and perhaps to show the horse’s impatience at waiting in the snow. The only other sound is of the light wind and the fluffy snowflakes falling to the ground, emphasising the stillness in the woods.
