Satyajit Ray was a renowned filmmaker, writer, graphic artist, and music composer from India, regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th-century cinema. Born on May 2, 1921, Ray began his career as a junior visualizer before he moved into film direction with his iconic film "Pather Panchali", which pioneered a new wave in Indian cinema.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ray directed 36 films, which consisted of feature films, documentaries, and shorts. His work predominantly showcased social and humanitarian issues with a deep sense of compassion. Ray's cinema was marked by a high degree of intellectual rigour, visual elegance, and artistic integrity, gaining him international fame and admiration.
In addition to his filmmaking, Satyajit Ray was a prolific author, most famous for creating memorable characters in Bengali children's literature like the detective Feluda and the scientist Professor Shonku.
Ray was honoured with numerous awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a Golden Lion, and a Golden Bear, and received an Honorary Award at the Academy Awards in 1992.
