Munshi Premchand was an Indian writer famous for his contribution to modern Hindi-Urdu literature. Born, Chanpat Rai, on 31 July 1880 in Lamhi, a village located near Varanasi, Premchand lost his mother at the age of eight. As a child, he sought solace in fiction and developed a fascination for books. He took the job of selling books for a book wholesaler, which gave him the opportunity to read a lot of books that helped him become a writer later. Some of his notable works include Gaba, Sadgati, Shatranj ke Khilari and Oka Oori Katha. He died on 8 October in 1936 in Varanasi.
