About the Poet - The Skylark | New Oxford Modern English | Class 5 Literature | English
Christina Rossetti was an English poet who wrote various romantic, devotional, and children's poems in the 19th century. She is best known for her long poem Goblin Market, her love poem Remember, and for the words of the Christmas carol In the Bleak Midwinter.
Born in London to an artistic family — her father was the poet Gabriele Rossetti, her mother was the teacher Frances Polidori, and her siblings included the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the critic William Michael Rossetti — she lived a comfortable, cultured life. Despite this, she struggled with depression and other health problems throughout her life.
Rossetti's poetry is characterised by its romantic and devotional themes, and she often used complex symbols and structures. She is remembered as a leading figure in Victorian literature, and her work has continued to influence writers and artists to this day.
