There is a mixture of three solid compounds, $A$, $B$, and $C$. Out of these compounds, $A$ and $C$ are soluble in water, and compound $C$ is sublimable also. In what sequence can the following techniques be used for their effective separation?
I Filtration
II Sublimation
III Crystallisation from water extract
IV Dissolution in water
A (II), (I), (IV), (III)
B (IV), (I), (II), (III)
C (I), (II), (III), (IV)
D (II), (IV), (I), (III)
The correct option is D: (II), (IV), (I), (III).
Here is the sequence of techniques for the effective separation of the mixture of compounds $A$, $B$, and $C$:
(II) Sublimation: First, we utilize sublimation to separate compound $C$ since it is sublimable. This process will directly convert $C$ from solid to gas, leaving $A$ and $B$ behind.
(IV) Dissolution in water: Next, dissolve the remaining mixture of $A$ and $B$ in water. Since $A$ is soluble and $B$ is insoluble in water, $A$ will dissolve while $B$ remains as a solid.
(I) Filtration: Filter the solution to separate the undissolved $B$ from the dissolved $A$. The filter retains solid $B$, and the filtrate contains $A$ in solution.
(III) Crystallisation: Finally, crystallize $A$ from the water solution. By evaporating the water or cooling the solution, $A$ crystallizes out, leaving purified $A$ crystals.
This methodical approach effectively isolates each compound in the sequential steps described.
