Name and define the different types of leaves.
Leaves are crucial parts of a plant that carry out photosynthesis, gas exchange, and transpiration. They can be categorized based on various characteristics:
Simple Leaves: These leaves have a single blade or lamina attached to a stem via a petiole. They do not have any subdivisions. Examples include mango and cherry leaves.
Compound Leaves: These leaves have a blade that is divided into multiple leaflets. Each leaflet is attached to a rachis (a central axis), but only a single petiole connects the leaf to the stem. Compound leaves are further divided into:
Palmately Compound Leaves: The leaflets are attached at a common point, like the fingers of a hand. Example: Horse chestnut.
Pinnately Compound Leaves: The leaflets are arranged along either side of an elongated rachis. Example: Rose leaves.
Modified Leaves: These leaves serve functions other than photosynthesis and are adapted to specific environments or roles. Examples include:
Tendrils (used for climbing in peas),
Spines (for reducing water loss and providing defense in cacti),
Storage leaves (used for water storage in succulents like aloes),
Bracts (colorful leaves that attract pollinators, found in bougainvillea).
These various types of leaves highlight the adaptability and diversity of plants in responding to environmental conditions and ecological roles.
