J.C. Daniel was a renowned filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer, often regarded as the "Father of Malayalam Cinema". Born on 28th January 1893 in Kerala, Daniel entered the world of cinema by establishing the first film studio in Kerala known as The Travancore National Pictures in 1926. His film, Vigathakumaran, a silent movie, marked the beginning of Malayalam cinema. Despite being initially unsuccessful, Daniel’s visionary efforts in filmmaking were recognized by the Kerela government in the 1990s, over six decades after his debut. The highest award for lifetime achievement in Malayalam cinema, The J. C. Daniel Award, was instituted in his honour.
Mohan Sivanand is an iconic artist, illustrator, writer and an editor, best known for his work with the Reader’s Digest magazine. Born in Kerala, Sivanand pursued his passion for art from the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, following which he went on to study Commercial Arts in Mumbai’s highly prestigious Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art. He later joined Reader's Digest in 1974 and served as an Editor and Art Director of its Indian edition for almost 40 years. Sivanand has also done several book illustrations, designed scores of book covers, and painted many portraits of eminent personalities. He is known for his unparalleled ability in creating easy-to-understand illustrations for complex subjects. His work is also characterized by its gentle humour and attention to detail.
