Management is
A) None of these
B) both an art and a science
C) a science
D) an art
The correct option is B) both an art and a science.
Management embodies elements of both art and science. By integrating systematic knowledge (science) and personal skills (art), management effectively coordinates and optimizes resources to achieve organizational goals.
Karan is the General Manager of Analytics Ltd. He faced a problem in some policy on purchases. Instead of talking to the purchase department, he directly consulted his supervisor, Subhash, about the problem. He talked to him freely and developed an independent channel of communication. It was based completely on their mutual goodwill: Karan did not follow strict rules and regulations relating to the formal line of communication and also exaggerated the impact of his problem to the extent of creating rumors.
(i) Name the type of organization followed by Karan? Explain its meaning.
(ii) What could have been done by Karan if he followed the formal lines of communication to solve the problem on purchases?
(iii) Which line of communication could have given a better solution and why?
(iv) State the limitations of the case study.
(i) Informal organization is the type of organization Karan followed. This refers to interactions between individuals that goes beyond their formal titles within a company. It's fostered through informal conversations that could occur during tea breaks, training sessions, office parties, or casual meetups outside of business hours.
(ii) If Karan had adhered to a formal organization structure, he should have approached the problem by consulting with his supervisor and involving the purchase department, as well as any other relevant managerial heads. This formal line of communication would ensure that all involved parties cross-verify and align on handling the policy issue efficiently, maintaining transparency and taking collective and informed action.
(iii) Adopting a formal line of communication could have potentially offered a better solution because it usually ensures that problem handling is transparent and in alignment with organizational goals and policies. Even though this might introduce some delay due to the procedural requirements, it minimizes the risk of miscommunication and promotes systematic problem-solving.
(iv) The limitations in this case study include Karan’s failure to adhere to established organizational policies and procedures, which contravenes the goals set by the organization. His approach led to the creation of rumors which not only misinformed other employees but could potentially damage working relationships and trust within the workplace. Instead of utilizing official channels, he relied on personal relations and informal communications, which might not only bypass several hierarchical levels but also reduce the overall effectiveness and productivity of the organization.
The post of supervisor should be abolished in the hierarchy of managers. Do you agree? Give any three reasons in support of your answer.
I disagree with the assertion that the position of supervisor should be eliminated from the managerial hierarchy. Here are three key reasons:
Mediator Role:
Supervisors act as crucial links between top management and subordinates.
They foster a cooperative environment between both management levels.
Motivating Subordinates:
Supervisors play a key role in maintaining discipline and overseeing the tasks performed by subordinates.
They empower and motivate employees to work diligently and efficiently under their guidance.
Optimum Utilisation of Resources and Effective Communication:
Supervisors are essential for the proper allocation of resources among subordinates.
They define the roles and responsibilities of team members and ensure that work is completed in accordance with the top management’s planned instructions.
