How did the colonial rule affect the lives of the tribal chiefs?
Under the British rule, the roles and powers of the tribal chiefs largely changed. The chiefs were allowed to maintain their land titles over clusters of villages and rent out lands, but they lost much of their administrative authority and were required to follow the laws made by British officials. Additionally, they were obligated to pay tribute to the British, and maintain discipline among the tribal groups on behalf of the British. Consequently, tribal chiefs lost the authority they traditionally held among their people and were unable to fulfil their conventional functions.
What changes did the British introduce in the cultivation practices of tribal groups?
