How did the British originally establish themselves in India as a small trading company?
The British initially arrived in India as the East India Company in 1600, receiving a charter from Queen Elizabeth I granting them exclusive rights to trade with the East. They established their first factory on the banks of the Hugli river in 1651. The Company then expanded trade and gained zamindari rights over villages. They also persuaded Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to issue a farman, giving them the right to trade duty free. Slowly they began asserting their power, leading to territorial control.
What led to the decline of Mughal power post the death of Aurangzeb?
