Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, often referred to as Rajaji or C.R., was an Indian lawyer, independence activist, politician, writer and statesman. He was born on December 10, 1878, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Rajagopalachari was an ardent supporter of Mahatma Gandhi and played a significant role in India's struggle for independence against British colonial rule.
He served as the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency from 1937 to 1939 and again from 1954 to 1957. He was also the last Governor-General of India, serving from 1948 to 1950. Following India's independence, he advocated for a united and integrated nation and was instrumental in setting up the Indian Administrative Service.
Rajagopalachari was also a prolific writer and translator. He retold the stories from the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, making them accessible to a wider audience. His other works include a number of novels, essays and historical books. His writing style was characterized by simplicity and clarity, making complex philosophical concepts accessible to ordinary readers.
He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1954. Rajagopalachari passed away on December 25, 1972. Today, his contributions to Indian politics and literature continue to be celebrated.
