"We were taking a short cut across the square when four dusty cars came in from the Meridian highway, moving slowly line. They went around the square, passed the bank building, and stopped in front of the jail."
Who is "we" in the above stanza?
Why did the cars stop in front of the jail?
What does this event suggest about the theme of the story?
"We" refers to Scout Finch, her elder brother Jem, and their friend Dill.
The cars stopped in front of the jail because the men in the cars had come to confront Atticus Finch, who was there defending Tom Robinson, a man falsely accused of a serious crime.
This event suggests themes of prejudice, injustice, and racial tension, which are central to the story. The confrontation indicates an unwillingness to accept the possibility of a black man being innocent, highlighting the deeply rooted racial disparities at the time.

About the Author - Scout Shows the Way | Gem's English Reader | Class 8 Literature | English
Harper Lee, whose full name is Nelle Harper Lee, was an American novelist widely known for her novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", published in 1960. Born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama, Lee was the youngest of four children. Her father was a former newspaper editor and proprietor, who later practised law and served in the Alabama State Legislature.
Lee attended the University of Alabama but did not complete her studies, dropping out to move to New York to pursue writing. This move proved successful as she landed a contract for her debut novel which gained immediate success and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is based in the mid-1930s, in a small Alabama town, greatly mimicking Lee's own hometown. The novel tackles the serious issues of rape and racial inequality, combining it with stories of the innocent wonders of childhood, and is one of the most widely read and analyzed novels in English literature classrooms across the globe.
Lee published her second book, "Go Set a Watchman" in 2015, which was originally written before "To Kill a Mockingbird". The sequel stirred up some controversy as it presented a more cynical perspective of some of the beloved characters from the original novel.
A private individual, Lee rarely gave interviews and led a quiet, secluded life with very few published works. She passed away in her sleep on February 19, 2016. Despite her small oeuvre, Lee's contribution using a novel as a vehicle to challenge racial prejudice and social justice still resonates with today’s world.
