Kailash Satyarthi is an Indian children's rights activist who has dedicated his life to fighting against child labour and promoting children's access to education. Born on January 11, 1954, in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, India, Satyarthi started his career as an electrical engineer but soon shifted his focus to social activism.
In 1980, he founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save the Childhood Movement), an organization dedicated to rescuing children from forced labour and exploitative working conditions. Over the years, Satyarthi's efforts have helped free thousands of children from bonded labour, and he has advocated for stronger national and international laws against child labour.
Kailash Satyarthi has also been a key figure in the establishment of the Global March Against Child Labor, a worldwide coalition of NGOs, teachers, and trade unions working towards the eradication of child labour. Additionally, he founded GoodWeave International, a nonprofit organization that aims to end illegal child labour in the rug-making industry through certification and labelling.
In recognition of his tireless work and dedication to children's rights, Kailash Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, sharing the honour with Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai. In his Nobel acceptance speech, Satyarthi emphasized the importance of globalizing compassion and working together to ensure every child's right to education, freedom, and a chance to dream.
