Extra Questions - The Shehnai of Bismillah Khan | Beehive | Class 9 Literature | CBSE English

How did Shehnai get its name?

According to popular folklore, Shehnai was given its name when it was first played in Shah's chambers by a nai (barber), who had improved the tonal quality of the earlier instrument called Pungi. Since it was played by a 'nai,' it came to be called Shehnai. The Shah was so impressed with the new instrument that he named it Shehnai, which means "King of Flutes."
