Here's how to form adjectives and some examples:
Use common adjective suffixes
Many adjectives are formed by adding suffixes to nouns, verbs, or other adjectives. Some common adjective suffixes include:
- -ful
- -less,
- -y,
- -ous
- -ive
- -ish
- -able
- -ible
- -ic
- -al
- -ar.
Examples:
- Noun + suffix: Beauty (noun) + -ful = beautiful (adjective)
- Verb + suffix: Attract (verb) + -ive = attractive (adjective)
- Adjective + suffix: Red (adjective) + -ish = reddish (adjective)
Use adjectives that are formed from past and present participles of verbs
Many adjectives can be formed using the past or present participle forms of verbs. The past participle often ends in -ed, while the present participle ends in -ing.
Examples:
- Past participle: Break (verb) -> broken (adjective); amaze (verb) -> amazed (adjective)
- Present participle: Bore (verb) -> boring (adjective); inspire (verb) -> ...
