In what ways was the Sri Krishna Eating House different from the restaurants in Thul?
Hari perceived the restaurants in Thul to be much more appealing and well-maintained compared to the Sri Krishna Eating House. While the Thul establishments were simple wooden shacks, they held an element of cleanliness and charm, highlighted by the thoughtful touches like flowers in old ink bottles and neatly arranged aerated drinks. Additionally, they were adorned with bright pictures of gods and goddesses, and the sweet aroma of burning joss sticks added to their allure. In stark contrast, the Sri Krishna Eating House was shabby and dirty. Its walls were almost entirely concealed by accumulated soot and grime, with the ceiling covered in cobwebs. Even the floor and wooden tables shared a similar fate, blanketed with soot from the open stoves, casting a dark and gloomy ambience around the place.

What did Hari ask the owner? What reply did he get?
Hari proposed to the owner of the Sri Krishna Eating House if he could work in the kitchen instead of paying for the food he was being given. The owner, after giving it a thought, agreed that he could use another boy in the kitchen. He asked Hari to start by washing the pots and then later help in kneading the dough and rolling out the chapattis. He also offered that Hari could stay there, work in exchange for his meals, and receive a wage of one rupee a day, similar to the other boys.
