About the Poet - The Shed | Honeycomb | Class 7 Literature | English
Francis Stanislaus Flynn, commonly known as Frank Flynn, was a renowned Australian ophthalmologist, author, and missionary priest born on the 6th of December, 1906, in Sydney. After receiving his early medical training in Sydney and London, Flynn joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1935. He dedicated a large part of his career to the Northern Territory, where he served as its consulting ophthalmologist from 1946 to 1968. During his tenure, Flynn significantly contributed to public health by promptly identifying and addressing the widespread prevalence of trachoma among the Australian Aboriginal population. His mentoring of Professor Fred Hollows led to a national survey on trachoma. In 1967, Flynn worked in Port Moresby as Administrator of the Cathedral and Director of Catholic Health Services in Papua New Guinea. He returned to Darwin in 1977 and remained active until the 1990s. Besides his extensive contributions to medicine and religion, Flynn was also an accomplished author, though the specifics of his literary work are not well-documented.
