This play written in the 1950s is a humorous and satirical depiction of the status of the mother in the family.
- What are the issues it raises?
- Do you think it caricatures these issues or do you think that the problem it raises are genuine? How does the play resolve the issue? Do you agree with the resolution?
- The issues which are brought forth by the play are the low status, which is given to mother in the houses, and no one feels gratitude for the work. The other significant issue, which is raised, is whether a mother should be confined within the house or has equal rights to go out and relax herself like her husband and children.
- These problems, which have been highlighted in this play, are truly genuine and applicable to a large number of homes even today. The author created the image of self effacing mother like Mrs. Pearson who desired to be loved and respected but could not even hurt her family members. The play tries to reiterate the pivotal position of the mother who needs to be cherished and respects by. Yes, I totally agree with it as the mother acts as a string, which keeps the whole garland together, and without her the whole family would crumble like a pack of cards.
-
If you were to write about these issues today what are the some of the incidents, examples and problems that you would think of as relevant?
