Despite her initial apprehensions about going to school, Bholi feels assured that she's going to a better place than her home when her father and mother treat her differently than usual before she leaves for school. For the very first time, she is given a clean dress, which previously belonged to her sister, Champa. Also, on that day, she was bathed and had oil rubbed into her dry, matted hair.

Why is Bholi's father worried about her?
Bholi's father, Ramlal, is worried about her because Bholi has neither good looks nor intelligence which would make finding a bridegroom extremely hard. From a very young age, Bholi had difficulties: she fell off her cot when she was ten months old which possibly damaged her brain, leading to developmental delays. Later, she contracted smallpox, which left deep, black pockmarks on her body. She also started speaking late and when she did, she stammered.
