About the Author - The Sound of Music Evelyn Glennie | Beehive | Class 9 Literature | CBSE English

Deborah (Mason) Cowley, a versatile writer and broadcaster, had a fulfilling career that spanned various parts of the globe. Originally from Toronto, she completed her studies at the University of Western Ontario and started working for the Unitarian Service Committee in Ottawa. Later, she worked with the UNHCR in Beirut and CIDA in Ottawa. While accompanying her husband, a diplomat, on his postings, Deborah pursued her passion for journalism and worked as a reporter for CBC radio in Washington, D.C. She also worked on several TV documentaries for CBC's Man Alive while in Cairo, where she wrote the first official guide book to the city since Baedeker's guide in the 1940s.

During her time in London and Brussels, Deborah contributed to the British and International editions of Reader's Digest by writing engaging articles. Her work required extensive research, which led her to report on AMREF's Flying Doctors in Kenya, accompany ORBIS' team of eye doctors working out of a DC10 in Bangalore, interview Dr. Lucille Teasdale in Northern Uganda, meet chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall in Tanzania, and interview Queen Sylvia of Sweden in Stockholm.

Summary - The Sound of Music Evelyn Glennie | Beehive | Class 9 Literature | CBSE English

Evelyn Glennie is a world-renowned percussionist who has achieved great success in the music industry despite being profoundly deaf. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and hard work.

Glennie's loss of hearing was gradual, and by the age of 11, it had deteriorated significantly. She was advised to be fitted with hearing aids and sent to a school for the deaf, but she refused to give up on her dream of pursuing a career in music.

With the help of her percussion teacher Ron Forbes, Glennie learned to sense sounds and vibrations in different parts of her body rather than relying on her ears. This enabled her to develop her musical abilities and led to her becoming one of the most sought-after percussionists in the world.

Glennie has won numerous awards and accolades for her music, including the Royal Philharmonic Society's Soloist of the Year Award in 1991. She is known for her ability to express music beautifully and has brought percussion to the forefront of the orchestra.

In addition to her regular concerts, Glennie also gives free concerts in prisons and hospitals and prioritizes teaching classes for young musicians. She is an inspiration to deaf children and people with disabilities who look to her as a role model for what is possible with hard work and determination.

Overall, Evelyn Glennie's story is an inspiring one of overcoming obstacles and achieving success in the face of adversity. She has shown that with dedication and perseverance, one can achieve greatness and make a significant impact in the world.
