Where did the children go? What was the sign of something going wrong?
The children went along the fence towards the little swing gate that was near the tunnel where they intended to look for wild cherries. The sign of something going wrong was when they noticed a very odd noise β a soft noise, but quite plainly to be heard through the sound of the wind in tree branches and the hum and whir of the telegraph wires. As they listened, it did not stop, but it grew louder and more rustling and rumbling, leading to an unsettling scenario where the trees were moving, and the great rock on the top of the walking trees leaned forward, and trees, grass and bushes slipped right away onto the railway line with a blundering crash.

What was the turning point in the story that signalled danger looming ahead?
The turning point in the story that signalled danger looming ahead was when the children noticed the odd rustling sound which was followed by the trees moving along the rocky face of the cliff. Suddenly, the great rock and trees on it leaned forward and slipped away, falling onto the railway tracks and creating a dangerously large mound. Most crucially, Peter remembered that the 11:29 train had not yet passed, indicating an imminent disaster if the obstruction was not cleared or the train warned in time.

About the Author - The Saviours | WOW English | Class 8 Literature | English
E. Nesbit, whose full name is Edith Nesbit, was an English author and poet known for her innovative and influential childrenβs stories. Born on August 1858, she started publishing her works in the 1890s. She's credited with revolutionizing children's literature by featuring real-life situations and practical, relatable children rather than the fantastical scenarios or perfect, idealized child characters that were common in works before hers.
Some of her most popular works include 'The Railway Children', 'Five Children and It' and 'The Phoenix and the Carpet'. Beyond her career as an author, Nesbit was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a socialist organisation. E. Nesbit passed away in May 1924, but her legacy continues to impact the world of childrenβs literature.
