Extra Questions - Mrs Packletide's Tiger | WOW English | Class 8 Literature | English

It was Mrs. Packletide’s pleasure and intention that she should shoot a tiger. Not that the lust to kill had suddenly descended on her or that she felt that she would leave India safer and more wholesome than she had found it, with one fraction less of wild beast per million of inhabitants.

a. Why did Mrs. Packletide want to kill a tiger?

b. Was she successful in killing the tiger?

c. What kind of lady was Mrs. Packletide?

a. Mrs. Packletide wanted to kill a tiger because she desired to outshine Loona Bimberton, who had recently been carried eleven miles in an aeroplane by an Algerian aviator and talked of nothing else.

b. Mrs. Packletide did not directly kill the tiger. The tiger died due to heart failure caused by the sudden report of her rifle, accelerated by senile decay. However, she took credit for the kill, and the villagers played along for the reward of a thousand rupees.

c. Mrs. Packletide was a competitive and superficial lady. Her driving force was not a genuine interest in hunting or a passion for wildlife but rather a rivalry with Loona Bimberton. Her actions were focused on gaining attention and praise, exemplified by her plans to host a lavish party with the tiger skin.

Mrs. Packletide had already designed in her mind the tiger-claw brooch that she was going to give Loona Bimberton on her next birthday. In a world that is supposed to be chiefly swayed by hunger and by love Mrs. Packletide was an exception, her movements and motives were largely governed by dislike of Loona Bimberton.

a. What plan did Mrs. Packletide make to outshine Mrs. Bimberton?

b. Why did she want to gift Loona Bimberton a tiger-claw brooch?

c. What was Mrs. Bimberton’s reaction when she got the tiger-claw brooch?

Back Questions - Mrs Packletide's Tiger | WOW English | Class 8 Literature | English

Why did Mrs Packletide want to shoot a tiger?

Mrs Packletide wanted to shoot a tiger due to her rivalry with Loona Bimberton, who had recently gained fame for being carried for eleven miles in an aeroplane by an Algerian aviator. She wanted to outshine her by securing a tiger skin and press photographs of her achievement, which she believed would make her the centre of attention and conversation. Her decision was not driven by a desire for the thrill of the hunt but by her dislike of Loona Bimberton.

About the Author - Mrs Packletide's Tiger | WOW English | Class 8 Literature | English

Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916), better known by his pen name Saki, was a British author and satirist known for his witty and humorous short stories. Born in British Burma, Saki was sent to England as a child to live with his grandmother and aunts, who heavily influenced his later writings. He served in the police force in Burma before turning to a career in writing.

Saki's works often focus on the Edwardian era's social mores, providing a satirical and critical view of the British upper class. His writing style is marked by its wit, irony, and sharp observations, which he employs to expose hypocrisy and absurdity in society. His stories often feature surprise endings and dark humour, making them entertaining and thought-provoking.

Some of Saki's most famous works include the short story collections "Reginald," "Reginald in Russia," "The Chronicles of Clovis," "Beasts and Super-Beasts," and "The Toys of Peace." Unfortunately, Saki's life was cut short when he was killed in action during World War I. However, his works continue to be celebrated and enjoyed by readers who appreciate his unique blend of humour and insight.
