The Bishop had given everything valuable he owned to the poor, except for a silverware set and a pair of silver candlesticks left by his mother. He had even given his church palace to the townspeople for use as a hospital. When Valjean came to him in need, he shared his simple meal and offered him a place to sleep for the night.

Upon Valjean's arrival, instead of turning him away, the Bishop invited him in with warmth. Even though Valjean was a stranger and an ex-convict, the Bishop treated him with kindness and respect, which was clear from their exchange and his actions.

After Valjean stole his silver cutlery, the Bishop not only forgave him but also lied to the police to protect Valjean. Rather than accusing Valjean of theft, he declared that he had given the silver cutlery and candlesticks to him.

About the Author - The Bishop of Digne | New Mulberry (ICSE) | Class 8 Literature | English

Victor Hugo was a renowned French author, poet, and dramatist of the Romantic Movement during the 19th century. Born on February 26, 1802, he is considered one of France's greatest writers whose works touch on social and political issues. Some of his works include "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Les Misérables," the latter of which the character Jean Valjean originates from.

Not only did Hugo's writings influence the Romantic literary movement, but his political ideas highly impacted the establishment of the Third Republic. Hugo lived through turbulent times, experiencing both monarchies and republics, all of which he critiqued in his writings. Despite living in exile for some part of his life, he continued to write and support causes he believed in such as social justice and abolishment of the death penalty.

Hugo died on May 22, 1885 and his death was a national mourning in France. His works continue to be celebrated and revered today for their profound influence on French literature and philosophy.
