The narrator, who has been on a leave of absence due to an injury received on the war front, fortuitously encounters John Cavendish, whom he has not seen in years. John is considerably older than the narrator, but they had a shared connection through the time the narrator often spent as a boy at Styles, Johnβs motherβs estate. Catching up on old times, John invites him to spend his sick leave at Styles. He also reveals that his mother, Mrs. Cavendish, whom the narrator remembered as a philanthropic society lady, has remarried.
