Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British author best known for creating the iconic detective character, Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he first developed an interest in storytelling. He began writing short stories while working as a doctor, and eventually published his first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet," in 1887.
Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, featuring the brilliant detective and his loyal friend Dr. John Watson, became immensely popular and have had a lasting impact on detective fiction. In addition to the Holmes stories, Doyle also wrote historical novels, science fiction, plays, and poetry. He was also deeply interested in spiritualism and wrote several books on the subject.
Despite his wide range of literary interests, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best remembered for his contribution to the world of detective fiction and the enduring characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. His captivating stories continue to inspire adaptations in film, television, and literature to this day.
