About the Author - The Dying Detective | New Mulberry Coursebook | Class 8 Literature | English

Arthur Conan Doyle was a British author who is best known for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major innovation in the field of crime fiction. He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement", helped to popularize the mystery of the Mary Celeste.

Doyle was a practicing doctor, and wrote stories and articles occasionally until his practice failed. He then went on to become a full-time writer, and eventually became one of the highest paid authors of his time. His Sherlock Holmes stories made him a fortune, and he also wrote a series of historical novels which were very popular at the time. Despite the success of his Sherlock Holmes stories, Doyle was somewhat embittered by the overshadowing of his other works by the popular detective.
