About the Author - Sherlock Holmes | English Castle | Class 8 Literature | English
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician, best known for his creation of the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Born in Scotland in 1859, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh where he was influenced by Dr. Joseph Bell whose keen powers of observation would later inspire the character of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle began writing stories whilst studying and his first significant work featuring Sherlock Holmes, "A Study in Scarlet," was published in 1887. Despite initially struggling to gain traction, Sherlock Holmes, along with his loyal companion Dr. Watson, gained worldwide fame and have since become icons in detective fiction. Interestingly, while Doyle's Holmes series brought him great success, he grew tired of the character and attempted to kill him off, though public outcry led him to later revive the detective. Beyond his detective stories, Doyle also wrote historical novels, poetry, and plays. He passed away in 1930.
