Femando Sorrentino (b. 1942), an Argentine writer, was born in Buenos Aires. He taught language and literature in several high schools before he took to writing. His work is in the form of six short story collections and essays on Argentinian literature which appeared in the daily of Buenos Aires, La Nacion. He has written no poems, though he tried to do so when he was very young. He candidly admits: ‘I lack the minimum talent to write a worthwhile poem. With no remorse I destroyed the poems of my youth, since it made no sense to me to add more ugliness to the world.’ His prose works, however, are admired for their curious mixtures of fantasy and humour and have been translated into English, Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Bulgarian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tamil, Kannada and Kabyle.
