What is Active & Passive Voice?
Active and passive voice are two ways of expressing the same sentence, but from different perspectives.
- Active voice is a structure where the subject of the sentence performs the action. For example, "The cat chased the mouse." In this sentence, "the cat" is the subject, and it performs the action of "chasing" the mouse. The sentence is written in the active voice.
- Passive voice is a structure where the subject of the sentence receives the action. For example, "The mouse was chased by the cat." In this sentence, "the mouse" is the subject, and it receives the action of being "chased" by the cat. The sentence is written in the passive voice.
In general, active voice is more direct and straightforward, while passive voice can sound more formal or indirect. However, passive voice is useful when the focus is on the action itself rather than the person or thing performing the action.
Converting a sentence from active voice to passive voice typically involves the following steps:
- Identify the subject and object of the sentence:
- In an active sentence, the subject performs the action on the object.
- In a passive sentence, the object becomes the subject, and the subject may be omitted or appear in a prepositional phrase.
- Determine the tense and form of the verb:
- The main verb in a passive sentence is always in the past participle form, while the auxiliary verb "be" is used to indicate the tense (e.g. "am," "is," "are," "was," "were," "has been," "have been," "had been," "will be," "would be," etc.).
- Add the auxiliary verb "be" and the past participle form of the main verb:
- The main verb of the sentence is changed to its past participle form and combined with the appropriate form of "be."
- The subject may be introduced with the preposition "by."
- Adjust the word order:
- In a passive sentence, the object becomes the subject and appears at the beginning of the sentence, followed by the auxiliary verb "be" and the past participle form of the main verb.
- The subject (if included) appears after the verb or in a prepositional phrase.
For example, let's convert the following sentence from active voice to passive voice:
Active: The dog chased the cat.
- Identify the subject and object: The subject is "dog" and the object is "cat."
- Determine the tense and form of the verb: The verb "chased" is in the past tense ...
