Ella Wheeler Wilcox was an American author and poet best known for her collection "Poems of Passion." Born on November 5, 1850, in Johnstown, Wisconsin, she began publishing at an early age and was lauded for her affinity with themes of love and spirituality.
Her poetry, often written in plain, rhyming verse, won her a wide following among popular readers but little critical acclaim. However, her simple yet touching expressions of universal themes like love, death, and nature resonated with many readers. She possessed a keen ability to empathize with her readers and her words are often filled with hope, positivity, and strong emotions.
Perhaps her most popular poem is "Solitude," which opens with the well-known lines: 'Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone.'
Wilcox's poetry was largely self-help and motivational, something of a precursor to today's New Age movement, and up until her death in 1919, she continued to inspire and motivate through her writing.
