Read the passage given below. Replace the underline words with their synonyms from the text and rewrite the paragraph in your notebook.
A mighty earthquake struck the east coast of India. The earth shook for a long time. Huge buildings swayed and the roads cracked. Old historic monuments crumbled. The earthquake had disastrous effects. Even days after the quake, people starved for food, and relief did not reach them. The callousness of the government authorities was repulsive. People were bewildered to see that the newer buildings which were supposed to withstand earthquakes were badly affected, too. Clearing the rubble and rescuing all the injured seemed like a colossal task. People from across the world sent their help to the places that were affected the most. The unpleasant experience will come to an end only when houses are rebuilt.
Geologists had warned of this impending disaster. They had also recommended that the houses should be constructed in such a way that they are safe from earthquakes. The warning signs were ignored and the recommendations overlooked, thus leading to loss of lives. People are scared of the aftershocks as they kept jolting the place at short intervals.
The powerful earthquake also triggered a tsumani in the Bay of Bengal and water lashed the coastal cities with great force. Everything seems quiet. The stench of dead livestock fills the air. But hope still prevails. People from varied backgrounds from across the world have joined their hands to help those in need.
