Ruskin Bond is an acclaimed Indian author of British descent who is renowned for his contributions to children's literature in India. Born on May 19, 1934, in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, he spent his early years in different parts of India including Dehradun, Shimla, and Jamnagar. His works encompass a wide spectrum of genres and themes, ranging from the Indian independence movement to nature and the Himalayas.
Bond's literary journey began with his first novel, "The Room on the Roof," which won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957. Over several decades, he has authored over a hundred books, including several short stories, novellas, vignettes, essays, poems, and children's books. His popular works include "The Blue Umbrella", "A Flight of Pigeons", "Rusty, the Boy from the Hills", and "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra".
In recognition of his contributions to literature, Bond was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992, the Padma Shri in 1999, and the Padma Bhushan in 2014. Despite his significant achievements in literature, Bond is noted for his simple lifestyle in his hill-side home in Landour, Mussoorie where he continues to write, surrounded by his beloved nature.
